19 Jan What is a Good Environment for Study?
The environment you choose to do your studying in matters. It can make studying more difficult and slow OR it can make studying much more effective and efficient.
Studying in the same place each time helps your mind get focused quickly. Our environment gives us subconscious cues about what to do and how to act in that environment. This means you should not study sitting in bed. Your brain has been conditioned to sleep in this environment, not focus and study. Sitting at a desk or table are best to cue your brain to focus.
Your study environment should be a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted or distracted.
Consider placing an analog clock somewhere near your workspace. Being able to see time actually pass can be a powerful motivator to get focus and work quickly.
Your study environment should have space to spread out your materials. Keep your work space clear of junk: extra papers, garbage or old dishes, clothing, too many office supplies. All of this stuff just gets in the way and distracts your brain from the task at hand.
Don’t overlook the impact of electronics on your study environment. Set your phone out of sight. Use blockers on your computer so that you aren’t tempted by notifications or icons on your desktop.
Use a lamp to provide good lighting. Too often students work by the light of their computer. This makes you sleepy and is inefficient. Lighting matters!
